Housing International’s manufactured, engineered, and environmentally enclosed housing development process delivers 15 different home styles. They range in size and design from 240 sq ft. to 5,000 sq. ft. with the ability to add on at any time. HI can produce single-family dwellings, condos, and apartments that are 3 stories, 5-plexes, etc.; shopping centers, schools or medical centers.

Each automated factory can produce 8,000-12,000 homes per year for shipping anywhere in the world. Housing International’s competitive advantage is that it can create homes that are ready to assemble in 14 to 20 days. They are packaged so efficiently that they can be shipped anywhere in the world in 4 weeks. HI envisions having multiple plants over the next 5 years, strategically located to provide housing products for our targeted markets.

The housing is designed and built to meet F.H.A. approved requirements. The first and second phase building standards include wind shear, earthquake, flood and fire resistant construction. The second phase requires that interior finished wall construction materials meet the strict International Building Code as well as codes for both California and Florida.

When looking for Permanent Housing-Housing International can give you instant value over a mobile home, which will lose value the minute they are purchased. With Housing International, you are building revenue the minute it is placed on the foundation. Katrina Cottages are built to withstand hurricane class winds and rain and are in structural compliance with ICBO to include materials such as Sure Board/Hardy Siding/Steel Frame, floor, and roof truss. Foundation systems are already available and approved in Louisiana and Mississippi. Katrina Tiny 3 Cottages can be purchased with all hook up features necessary before installation. Housing International can build steel ramps for handicap access as well.

Katrina Cottages

A Katrina cottage is conceived to be a small, yet permanent house to be built and installed on-site for the same price as a FEMA trailer.

The Katrina Cottages are designed by a collective of senior architects including Andrés Duany, Steve Oubre, Susan Henderson, Eric Moser, Steve Mouzon, Matt Lambert and Diane Dorney, and has been designated by the Louisiana legislature as the path to new building standards in the state.

A Katrina Cottage is conceived to be a small, yet permanent house to be built and installed on-site for the same price as an existing FEMA trailer. The U.S. government spends at least 140,000 per trailer for temporary housing. While helpful on a temporary basis, the need for a permanent home remains immediate. The magnitude of the Katrina-Rita disaster has so upset the balance of housing supply and demand in Louisiana that FEMA trailers may be needed much longer than initially anticipated.

The Katrina Cottage developed by Housing International in St. John’s Parish is one of two in existence to date. The other is on display in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour has testified before Congress and encouraged FEMA to accept Katrina Cottages as a substitute housing solution as it meets with state housing standards and provides housing for people currently living in FEMA trailers. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco also supports such cottages as a permanent alternative to the temporary FEMA trailers.

The Katrina Cottages are designed to take advantage of the latest approaches in panelized construction techniques, and while initial designs range from 240 sq. ft. to 700 sq. ft., the homes can be expanded into full-size permanent homes going from 1,500 sq. ft. to 2,500 sq. ft. The structure can be built and delivered within three weeks. The 'Katrina cottage' concept represents a significant opportunity for recovery planners to learn from the devastation brought by hurricane Katrina and Rita and better address critical housing needs in future disasters. As Housing International continues its business planning to support long-term recovery from these disasters, it will deliver pro-active, new ideas that can help eliminate inefficiencies and better serve residents of Louisiana and Mississippi. Katrina Cottages offer appealing designs in regional styles. They are constructed to be permanent dwellings, meeting the highest standards of storm-resistance, with the idea of offering an immediate alternative to FEMA trailers.

Packaged, Shipped, and Easy Assembly

Fast Facts On Panelized Construction: What is panelized construction? Panelized construction involves the building of individual walls, or wall sections of a new home (or new section of a remodeled home), in a factory- controlled environment. Factory-built wall panelizing systems offer added efficiency and quality control. Traditional “Site-framing” is done outdoors with rough lumber delivered to a job site; Panelized Construction (wall systems and framing) is done indoors, with the added efficiency and quality control provided by computer automation. State-Of-The-Art fabrication tables, Precisely engineered 18 gauge galvanized steel studs, self tapping screw guns, forklifts, and engineering are used. As each stud is manufactured they are marked with a number code. Those studs are then assembled into individual walls. The "Open Panel" is the most common panelized system used while several types of wall panels are produced, the "open panel" is most common-and it's what we use with our packages. Exterior walls are wrapped with Tvyek moisture barrier, windows and doors are already pre-hung, installed and trimmed out with Hardie-Trim, and the Hardie-Panel siding is pre-primed and installed. Having all of the time-consuming construction already completed substantially reduces the need for large job site labor requirements. Interior panels are left open on one side to complete wiring, plumbing, heating/cooling and on-site inspection. An added benefit to "Open Frame Panels" is that this method is conducive to custom designs and will accommodate on-site change orders issued during construction.

Volume purchasing cuts YOUR end line cost! Factory building of panelized homes and buildings allows the manufacturer to purchase large volumes of steel, sheathing, windows/doors and many other materials. Volume purchasing offers significant costs savings as compared to materials purchased for individual "site-framed homes", this cost efficiency is passed along to the individual home buyer/builder.

Putting the wall panels together on the job site is made easy as each wall section or panel is manufactured, it is marked with number and letter code that corresponds with the individual home plan. This assures accuracy in placement when panels are delivered to the building site and assembled.

The "bottom line" is...panelization is a superb choice for Owner-Builders and private construction or building companies. Buyers experience a shorter start-to-finish construction cycle time, with enhanced quality and substantial cost controls-including the opportunity to save on construction loan interest rates. Since panelization uses standard "stick-built" frame construction, the home-buyer has the freedom to customize the home to their specific needs. The impact of material costs, material waste, theft, labor availability, construction errors and the damaging effects of weather are minimized during the construction process of a panelized building system. The popularity and use of panelized construction has soared nationwide in recent years and it is used in all areas and types of construction is expected to grow even faster in the Twenty-First Century.
